Case Study: Boosting Employee Retention at Guardian with HVLS Fans

Identifying the Problem

When a Guardian facility in Wisconsin lost 4 employees in one summer, they calculated the exits cost them six figures. They immediately started looking for solutions to improve the quality of their working conditions, keep employees more comfortable on the floor, and boost retention rates.

One key factor they sought to remedy was indoor air quality – and rightly so. A survey of workers at a different facility said that 40% of employees have left work because the quality of the air made them feel ill. [1] Luckily, improving indoor air quality doesn’t just benefit employees and make them want to stick around – it benefits Guardian, too. Upgrading workplace ventilation is shown to improve worker performance by 8%. [2]

Armed with these numbers, Guardian turned to VividAir to install a fleet of high volume, low speed (HVLS) fans. HVLS fans improve air quality by maintaining consistent temperatures throughout a facility, managing humidity levels, and reducing the concentration of indoor pollutants through air circulation.

Working on the Solution

VividAir assigned a dedicated air scientist to Guardian and immediately got to work. We provided several drawings of potential layouts for their facility, as well as options with multiple VividAir products. Our fans are versatile and provide a variety of installation options custom to each job.

Guardian was immensely pleased with how much coverage our Z-Tech fans could provide. Z-Tech fans are ideal for warehouses and larger facilities and come in multiple sizes. With 32,400 sq. ft. of coverage and no dead zones beneath the fan, Guardian could install just 10 Z-Tech fans and instantly improve air circulation and air quality throughout their entire facility.

As a bonus, the cost of their VividAir install would be less than what losing 4 employees ultimately cost – making their decision easy.

Seeing the Results

The VividAir team went out and installed Guardian’s 10 fans in winter – but that doesn’t mean Z-Tech couldn’t go right to work.

Z-Tech blades are designed with true reversibility. When run in reverse, our fans take warm air trapped at the ceiling and recirculate it throughout the facility. Air circulation – and air quality – improves without the cooling effect of a traditional ceiling fan. Z-Tech also works to keeps temperatures consistent, a critical feat in the cold Wisconsin winter months.

As part of our after-sale service, we checked in with Guardian to see how their fans were holding up as it got warmer. They were immensely pleased with how Z-Tech was performing as a cooling aid as well. Their facility felt more comfortable, employees were happier, and the investment ultimately helped ensure they didn’t have costly resignations that summer. As a bonus, HVLS fans also cut back on heating and cooling bills simply by improving air circulation.

HVLS fans are an unparalleled investment when it comes to employee comfort, productivity, and safety. They also benefit facilities managers’ bottom line – boosting employee retention, lowering energy costs, and improving output. Guardian is proof that when you work with VividAir to install HVLS fans, everybody wins.
